Platinum Golf, Tours & Accommodation nominated for inaugural World Golf Awards
Platinum Golf, Tours & Accommodation, based in Knysna, South Africa has been nominated in the category ‘Africa’s best Golf Tour Operator 2014’. Run by Erik Ekkelkamp and Ypie Kingma, the company has been in existence since 2004, initially focusing on the Garden Route only, but expanding throughout South Africa as demand grew. ‘Guests kept returning, asking for alternative destinations within South Africa’, says an excited Ekkelkamp, while Kingma adds ‘and also more and more inquiries are coming in for non-golfing tours, as people are getting used to our service standards, and referring us to their friends and family as well.’
‘We have seen a shift in the market over the last couple of years, where international guests have come to realize South Africa has a lot to offer in terms of golf courses, safaris, scenery, people, food and of course wine. On top of that more and more guests feel confident about self-drives through the country, with roads generally being in good condition. Although tailor-made guided tours are still very popular, self-drives are slowly but surely taking over. The favorable exchange rate also contributes to a growing interest in South Africa.’
‘And with excellent courses in different ‘golfing hubs’ in South Africa, it is easy to see why golfers would want to visit this country. Although there is a growing demand for golf tours to countries like Kenya, Mauritius and the Seychelles, most of our guests play golf in South Africa, and possibly extend their trip with a few days at Vic Falls or a beach extension in Mauritius, the Seychelles or Mozambique. Top courses like The Links at Fancourt in nearby George, or Leopard Creek – close to the Kruger Park – not only speak to our guests’ imagination due to their legendary status, but also offer true African golfing experiences.’
Platinum Golf, Tours & Accommodation is one of only seven operators nominated for this prestigious award. World Golf Awards serves to celebrate and reward excellence in golf tourism, world class courses and golf destinations. The worldwide voting process began in June. Votes will be made by professionals working within the golf travel and tourism industry – senior executives, travel buyers, tour operators, agents and media professionals. Votes may also be cast by the public (golf tourism consumers). The voting works on a first-past-the-post system to ensure impartiality and independence. Votes are submitted online via the World Golf Awards website (http://worldgolfawards.com/award/africa-best-golf-tour-operator/2014#). Voting will close on October 2nd.
The inaugural Gala Ceremony of the World Golf Awards 2014 will take place in Portugal, from November 13th-16th. Awards will be made across a range of categories during the red carpet event, with leading golf tourism destinations competing for titles including Best Golf Resort, Best Golf Course, Best Golf Tour Operator, and Best New Golf Course.
Chris Frost, Managing Director, World Golf Awards, said: ‘We made the decision to launch World Golf Awards in reaction to overwhelming demand from the golf industry for a program that was fair and transparent. As we prepare to open the voting and begin our 2014 search we feel we have created program with a mission to serve as the definitive benchmark of excellence, and to help to foster a new era of growth in golf tourism.’
‘You have no idea how excited we are to be nominated for this award. The World Travel Awards have always been regarded as the Oscars of the Travel Industry. The World Golf Awards have specifically been created for the golf tourism industry. With quite a few colleagues in the industry, being nominated in itself is a major achievement!’ concludes a smiling Kingma.

Shall I tell you what I did today? I played one of the most scenic and challenging golf courses South Africa has to offer: The Links at Fancourt on the Garden Route. A course which should be on anybody’s bucket list of golf courses to play!Read More »
So here’s a question we often get: ‘We’re planning a golfing holiday to South Africa, and would like to play some great courses. What do you recommend?’ I never know what to say…Read More »
That brings me back to the original seminar, which after a few more presentations was turned into a brainstorm session on how to grow the golf industry in South Africa. I would assume you are not really interested in why and how ‘we’ as an industry plan to sustain and grow our own industry, but I did find it fascinating to realize that we actually have no idea where the industry stands, how many people specifically come to South Africa to play golf (as opposed to the ones who come to South Africa and may play the occasional round…), how much they spend and how often the return.Read More »
What sparked the writing of this blog is that today is the 1st of September, known as Spring Day here in South Africa. Our friends and family in the Northern Hemisphere are coming to the end of their summer, moving into autumn, while here the flowers are blooming, the days are getting longer and the temperatures are on the rise again. Obviously things are a little different here…Read More »
